Juicy Smashed Burger hasn’t been open long downtown at 117 SE 3rd Avenue, and already they have renamed (re-concepted?) as Burbowl. Not sure if it has anything to do with the competition, being directly across the street from the Union Restaurant & Café which has long advertised as having “downtown’s best burgers”. Anyone have a favorite? Of course if you’re a few blocks away near the Jewelry District there’s Top Burger 109 NE 1st Ave. I’m just bummed that the Union and Top Burger are only open for lunchtime during the week, but at least Burbowl is open late.
It’s baaack. It’s rare these days to see a condo development be cancelled, so it was a bit of a surprise when The Edge on Brickell (55 S. Miami Ave Rd.) was axed last year. Those following local development may have just chalked it up to a fantasy project, 58 stories, 3 condo units per floor, robotic parking (due to) sitting on a sliver of land on the Miami River you could barely fit 2 cars on parked nose to nose. But the plans were scrapped and the property sold. Now a new developer wants to revive the project as a hotel, with about 70 residential units. A new architect has been employed and plans for an even taller tower, reducing the sidewalk in front and severely limiting the Riverwalk. It’s hard to imagine how a tower could be built on this site without eliminating public access to the riverfront altogether.
The Miami River Commission is holding a hearing on Monday, May 9 at 12 noon at 1407 NW 7th Street
This seems to be taking a long time but I’m hopeful the first block (phase I & 2) in front of the courthouse is nearing completion. The rails were seen today, ready to be embedded into the sidewalk design. I can’t wait to see the completed look and how the rest of Flagler Street will look when finished. You can check it out here.
A couple of weeks ago I brought up the sad condition of the benches along the Riverwalk and called for their removal, then issued a challenge to the city (Miami Riverwalk Commission) to install better seating. Well the benches along the Miami Riverwalk have finally been removed. (All but one last one closest the Metromover, the corner with the wall and green fence still used as a urinal.) Much thanks to all involved who made this happen. Crews were out today clearing the brush and powering leafblowers. No word on if any new seating will be installed or what type would replace them if any. It won’t take much to improve this section of Riverwalk, at least a good powerwash for the underside of the bridges, maybe some white paint or murals, and bright lighting. Now to get the hotels to pitch in to clean up their part, and a path is still needed beside the Hyatt Regency to Brickell Ave .
